            Summary: This gene encodes a member of the PIWI subfamily of
            Argonaute family proteins. This subfamily of proteins contains a
            PAZ domain, found in proteins involved in RNA-mediated gene
            silencing, and a C-terminal Piwi domain. The encoded protein is
            thought to function in maintenance of germline cells. Multiple
            transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for
            this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2011].
            
            Transcript Variant: This variant (4) contains an alternate 5' exon
            compared to variant 1. This variant is represented as non-coding
            because the use of the 5'-most supported translational start codon,
            as used in variant 1, renders the transcript a candidate for
            nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD).
            
            Sequence Note: This RefSeq record was created from transcript and
            genomic sequence data to make the sequence consistent with the
            reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the
            transcript record were based on transcript alignments.
