The reference sequence was derived from AK315203.1, AJ236921.1, BG202742.1 and BG211606.1. This sequence is a reference standard in the RefSeqGene project. Summary: L-glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and activates both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is involved in most aspects of normal brain function and can be perturbed in many neuropathologic conditions. The metabotropic glutamate receptors are a family of G protein-coupled receptors, that have been divided into 3 groups on the basis of sequence homology, putative signal transduction mechanisms, and pharmacologic properties. Group I includes GRM1 and GRM5 and these receptors have been shown to activate phospholipase C. Group II includes GRM2 and GRM3 while Group III includes GRM4, GRM6, GRM7 and GRM8. Group II and III receptors are linked to the inhibition of the cyclic AMP cascade but differ in their agonist selectivities. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. Transcript Variant: This variant (2) uses an alternate donor splice site at the penultimate exon compared to transcript variant 1, resulting in an isoform (b) of the same length, but with 16 different amino acids at the C-terminus compared to isoform a. This variant was designated as HmGluR8b by Malherbe et al, 1999 (PMID:10216218). Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: AK315203.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: mixed/partial sample support ERS025082, ERS025084 [ECO:0000350] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
