The encoded protein interacts with TNFAIP3, and inhibits TNF-induced apoptosis by mediating the TNFAIP3 anti-apoptotic activity. Degradation of this protein by caspase-3-like family proteins is associated with apoptosis induced by TNF. This protein may also have a role in the inhibition of inflammatory signaling pathways. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, May 2011]. Transcript Variant: This variant (4) is missing an internal coding exon compared to variant 1. This results in the creation of an upstream ORF (uORF), translation of which will render this transcript a candidate for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). However, since the uORF has a weak Kozak signal, translation from an in-frame downstream AUG is possible by leaky scanning, resulting in an isoform (3) with a shorter N-terminus and missing an internal protein segment compared to isoform 1.
