The reference sequence was derived from AK096063.1, BC030524.1, AC098484.2 and BM681600.1. Summary: The product of this gene belongs to the claudin family. It plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity. Defects in this gene are the cause of hypomagnesemia renal with ocular involvement (HOMGO). HOMGO is a progressive renal disease characterized by primary renal magnesium wasting with hypomagnesemia, hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis associated with severe ocular abnormalities such as bilateral chorioretinal scars, macular colobomata, significant myopia and nystagmus. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2010]. Transcript Variant: This variant (2) contains an additional segment in the coding region compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (b) contains a shorter and distinct C-terminus compared to isoform a. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: AK291197.1, BC030524.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025081, ERS025084 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## PRIMARY REFSEQ_SPAN PRIMARY_IDENTIFIER PRIMARY_SPAN COMP 1-327 AK096063.1 1-327 328-817 BC030524.1 214-703 818-1150 AC098484.2 83523-83855 c 1151-1560 BM681600.1 157-566 c 1561-1839 AK096063.1 818-1096 1840-1840 AC098484.2 82833-82833 c 1841-3602 AK096063.1 1098-2859 FEATURES Location/Qualifiers source 1..3602 /organism="Homo sapiens" /mol_type="mRNA" /db_xref="taxon:9606" /chromosome="1" /map="1p34.2" gene 1..3602 /gene="CLDN19" /gene_synonym="HOMG5" /note="claudin 19" /db_xref="GeneID:149461" /db_xref="HGNC:2040" /db_xref="MIM:610036" exon 1..414 /gene="CLDN19" /gene_synonym="HOMG5" /inference="alignment:Splign:1.39.8" CDS 192..827 /gene="CLDN19" /gene_synonym="HOMG5" /note="isoform b is encoded by transcript variant 2; claudin-19" /codon_start=1 /product="claudin-19 isoform b" /protein_id="NP_001116867.1" /db_xref="GI:183979975" /db_xref="CCDS:CCDS44125.1" /db_xref="GeneID:149461" /db_xref="HGNC:2040" /db_xref="MIM:610036" /translation="
