TITLE Characterization of a human TAR RNA-binding protein that activates the HIV-1 LTR JOURNAL Science 251 (5001), 1597-1600 (1991) PUBMED 2011739 COMMENT REVIEWED REFSEQ: This record has been curated by NCBI staff. The reference sequence was derived from BI771121.1, AC023509.42 and BC002419.2. On Jan 18, 2006 this sequence version replaced gi:19743841. Summary: HIV-1, the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), contains an RNA genome that produces a chromosomally integrated DNA during the replicative cycle. Activation of HIV-1 gene expression by the transactivator Tat is dependent on an RNA regulatory element (TAR) located downstream of the transcription initiation site. The protein encoded by this gene binds between the bulge and the loop of the HIV-1 TAR RNA regulatory element and activates HIV-1 gene expression in synergy with the viral Tat protein. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. This gene also has a pseudogene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. Transcript Variant: This variant (2) has an alternate 5' exon and uses a downstream AUG codon for translation, as compared to variant 1. The encoded isoform (b) thus has a shorter N-terminus, as compared to isoform a. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: AL523706.3 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025081, ERS025088 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
