The reference sequence was derived from DC407297.1, BT019729.1, AK223353.1 and BC043502.1. On Feb 17, 2011 this sequence version replaced gi:49574505. Summary: This gene encodes a serine/threonine-protein kinase that is involved in mitotic regulation. This protein is localized to the centrosome, and undetectable during G1 phase, but accumulates progressively throughout the S phase, reaching maximal levels in late G2 phase. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms with distinct C-termini have been noted for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011]. Transcript Variant: This variant (1) represents the predominant transcript, and encodes the longest isoform (1, also known as NEK2A). The C-terminus (aa 399-445) of this isoform was shown to be responsible for its nucleolar localization (PMID:15161910). Isoforms 1 and 2 (which differ at the C-terminus) have also been reported to exhibit distinct pattern of expression during mitosis (PMID:11742531). Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: BC043502.1, U11050.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025098 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
