This sequence is a reference standard in the RefSeqGene project. On Nov 22, 2008 this sequence version replaced gi:4504810. Summary: This gene encodes a major cytoplasmic protein which is the only known constituent common to submembranous plaques of both desmosomes and intermediate junctions. This protein forms distinct complexes with cadherins and desmosomal cadherins and is a member of the catenin family since it contains a distinct repeating amino acid motif called the armadillo repeat. Mutation in this gene has been associated with Naxos disease. Alternative splicing occurs in this gene; however, not all transcripts have been fully described. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. Transcript Variant: This variant (1) represents the longer transcript. Variants 1 and 2 encode the same protein. Sequence Note: The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: Z68228.1, M23410.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025084 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
