The reference sequence was derived from BC012089.1, AY449691.1, DB326234.1 and AA622198.1. Summary: This gene encodes a pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein. The protein localizes to membrane protrusions and is often expressed on adult stem cells, where it is thought to function in maintaining stem cell properties by suppressing differentiation. Mutations in this gene have been shown to result in retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. Expression of this gene is also associated with several types of cancer. This gene is expressed from at least five alternative promoters that are expressed in a tissue-dependent manner. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009]. Transcript Variant: This variant (5) lacks an alternate in-frame exon in the 5' coding region and a second in-frame exon in the 3' coding region, compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (5), also known as s10, lacks an internal segment near the N-terminus and a second internal segment near the C-terminus, compared to isoform 1. The full structure of the 5' UTR for this variant has not been determined. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## CDS exon combination :: AY449691.1 [ECO:0000331] RNAseq introns :: mixed/partial sample support ERS025082, ERS025083 [ECO:0000350] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
