TITLE Relationships among the subunits of the high molecular weight proteinase, macropain (proteasome) JOURNAL Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1037 (2), 178-185 (1990) PUBMED 2306472 COMMENT REVIEWED REFSEQ: This record has been curated by NCBI staff. The reference sequence was derived from AL132780.5, BC057840.1, BC107720.1 and BU632351.1. On Aug 2, 2008 this sequence version replaced gi:22538468. Summary: The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure. The core structure is composed of 4 rings of 28 non-identical subunits; 2 rings are composed of 7 alpha subunits and 2 rings are composed of 7 beta subunits. Proteasomes are distributed throughout eukaryotic cells at a high concentration and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent process in a non-lysosomal pathway. An essential function of a modified proteasome, the immunoproteasome, is the processing of class I MHC peptides. This gene encodes a member of the proteasome B-type family, also known as the T1B family, that is a 20S core beta subunit in the proteasome. This catalytic subunit is not present in the immunoproteasome and is replaced by catalytic subunit 3i (proteasome beta 8 subunit). Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2009]. Transcript Variant: This variant (1) represents the longer transcript and encodes the longest protein (isoform 1). Sequence Note: The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from transcript and genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: AK225888.1, BC057840.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025081, ERS025082 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
