TITLE A human T cell-specific molecule is a member of a new gene family JOURNAL J. Immunol. 141 (3), 1018-1025 (1988) PUBMED 2456327 COMMENT REVIEWED REFSEQ: This record has been curated by NCBI staff. The reference sequence was derived from CD695497.1, CR980938.1, CB111656.1, HY265548.1, AA443491.1, AW769950.1, GD136908.1 and BG272739.1. Summary: This gene is one of several chemokine genes clustered on the q-arm of chromosome 17. Chemokines form a superfamily of secreted proteins involved in immunoregulatory and inflammatory processes. The superfamily is divided into four subfamilies based on the arrangement of two N-terminal cysteine residues of the mature peptide. This chemokine, a member of the CC subfamily, functions as a chemoattractant for blood monocytes, memory T helper cells and eosinophils. It causes the release of histamine from basophils and activates eosinophils. This cytokine is one of the major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8+ cells. It functions as one of the natural ligands for the chemokine receptor chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 5 (CCR5), and it suppresses in vitro replication of the R5 strains of HIV-1, which use CCR5 as a coreceptor. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2013]. Transcript Variant: This variant (2) uses an alternate exon in the 3' coding region, which results in a frameshift, compared to variant 1. The encoded isoform (2) has a longer and distinct C-terminus, compared to isoform 1. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: CR980938.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025084, ERS025088 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: full length.
