The reference sequence was derived from DB288439.1, AK296661.1, CR456852.1 and BQ045424.1. Summary: This gene encodes a member of the selenium-binding protein family. Selenium is an essential nutrient that exhibits potent anticarcinogenic properties, and deficiency of selenium may cause certain neurologic diseases. The effects of selenium in preventing cancer and neurologic diseases may be mediated by selenium-binding proteins, and decreased expression of this gene may be associated with several types of cancer. The encoded protein may play a selenium-dependent role in ubiquitination/deubiquitination-mediated protein degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2012]. Transcript Variant: This variant (3) uses an alternate splice site in the 5' region and initiates translation at an alternate start codon, compared to variant 1. The encoded isoform (3) is longer and has a distinct N-terminus, compared to isoform 1. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications. ##Evidence-Data-START## Transcript exon combination :: AK296661.1 [ECO:0000332] RNAseq introns :: single sample supports all introns ERS025084 [ECO:0000348] ##Evidence-Data-END## COMPLETENESS: complete on the 3' end.
